12th anniversary of the parinirvana of Shamar Rinpoche
June 10, 2026
Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, visited Sungai Petani, marking another joyful and deeply meaningful stop on his 2026 Malaysia tour.
Arriving at the Karma Kagyu Dharma Society Sungai Petani (KKDSSP) on 7 June, Karmapa was warmly welcomed by the resident community and devotees. The afternoon reception included a traditional mandala offering and offerings representing enlightened body, speech, and mind.
That evening, members gathered for a dinner with Karmapa, during which a commemorative video recalled his previous visit to the centre twenty years earlier, in 2006. In their speeches, members of the Board expressed their heartfelt gratitude and shared the hope that devotees would not have to wait another two decades before welcoming Karmapa back to Sungai Petani.
On 8 June, the centre celebrated its 35th anniversary in the presence of Karmapa. The celebrations were followed by public and private audiences, giving many devotees the precious opportunity to receive his guidance and blessings.
In the evening, Karmapa conducted a Refuge ceremony for those wishing to enter the Buddhist path. He then bestowed the Four-Armed Chenrezig empowerment upon a large gathering of devotees, carefully explaining each stage of the ritual and its profound meaning, enabling participants to engage with understanding and confidence.
On 9 June, Karmapa departed from Penang Airport for Kuching, continuing his 2026 Malaysia tour and leaving behind many joyful memories and renewed inspiration for the Dharma community in Sungai Petani.
