Letter by Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, on the occasion of Vesak 2026

A transcript of the letter follows.

Dear Dharma friends,

On this most auspicious day of Vesak, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and Parinirvana of Buddha Shakyamuni, I offer my prayers and warm wishes to all of you.

Vesak is an opportunity to reflect on the life and example of the Buddha, who attained perfect awakening through courage, wisdom, compassion, and dedicated practice. His life story reminds us that the path to lasting peace and liberation is open to all of us.

As practitioners of the Buddha Dharma, let us use this special day to cultivate kindness, rejoice in the virtues of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and generate aspirations for the benefit of all beings. Whatever practice we engage in today, whether meditation, prayer, recitation, or acts of generosity, may it deepen our compassion and wisdom.
May we use this auspicious occasion to remind ourselves that we all possess Buddha nature and the potential for awakening. By following our Buddha Shakyamuni’s example and applying his teachings in our daily lives, we can realise this potential and bring genuine benefit to ourselves and others.

On this sacred day, I encourage all of you to devote yourselves to practice as much as possible and dedicate your merit to the peace, well-being, and liberation of all sentient beings.

With prayers,

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa
