| His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa celebrates Sonam Loshar at Kaffer 2012 |

On the auspicious occasion of Sonam Loshar, the Tamang New Year, His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje was invited as Chief Guest to a three-day celebratory event in Kaffer, organised by the Tamang Buddhist Association of Kaffer and the Tamang Youth Association of Kalimpong. The celebrations were attended by Buddhist devotees representing a large variety of Himalayan communities, such as the Tamang, Sherpa, Yolpo, Lopa, Dolpo, Shingsa, Walung, Nyeshang, Bhutia, Lama, Thakali and others. |

On the first day of the festive occasion, His Holiness Karmapa inaugurated the programme by lighting the traditional butterlamp. This was followed by a varied and colourful programme of cultural performances by the different Himalayan communities, alternating with addresses delivered by the guests of honour. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() On the next day, January 30, 2012, His Holiness once again bestowed the empowerment of Buddha Amitayus, this time at His former residence in Kalimpong, West Bengal, to a gathering of several hundred devotees from Sikkim, Bhutan, Kalimpong and other Himalayan areas. |

Seated on a throne on the porch of His charming house, His Holiness Gyalwa Karmapa gave detailed explanations on the meaning and benefits of this empowerment, while the audience sitting on the lawn in front listened with rapt attention.
