In order to pay his respects to Her Majesty, the late Ashi Phuntso Choden Wangchuck, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, Trinlay Thaye Dorje, paid a visit to the Kingdom of Bhutan from October 6th to October 15th.

On August 24th, 2003, the Grand Queen Mother, Her Majesty Ashi Phuntsho Choden Wangchuck, passed away at her retreat place Dechenchholing Gonpa close to Bhutan’s capital Thimphu. Her remains, the Kudung, were kept there for a period of 49 days and rituals were performed. Shortly after her demise, H. H. Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche had visited Bhutan for a few days to pay his respects and to join in the rituals.

H. H. the Gyalwa Karmapa cancelled his other programs and travelled to Bhutan for the same reason. He arrived at Paro airport on October 6th and was received in the ceremonial lounge by Dasho Sangye Wangchuck, the Secretary for Cultural and Religious affairs, the Governor of Paro and his deputy, and the Ven. Lam Neten, that is to say the District Head Lama of Paro representing His Holiness the Je Khenpo.
